Agriculture in Biotechnologies

Biotechnologies plays an important role in Agriculture.  Before we dive into Agriculture, we need to know about plants and plant adaptations.  Watch the following videos on plant and write a 1 page summary on the videos.  This will be due on Monday 3/28/16.  The summary need to be 1 page long, font size 12, line spacing can not be larger than 1.5.  The fonts that you can use are Calibri, Arial, or Times Roman.

Plant observations

We will be covering the different aspects of Agriculture in Biotechnology.  Before we go into Agriculture we need to cover some Plant Science.

Lima Bean Observations

We will be planting lima beans and placing them on a designated window.  You will then create an observation form that you will be turning in weekly.  The following document will give you directions on how to plant your lima bean.  I will be giving you two lima beans so follow the directions but make it for two lima beans in the bag.

Observation Dates

The following are the weeks you should have for your observations.  If you are absent for any of those day, you still have to make a note of it.  Write on the observation, no observations made.  This way you can have an correct log for your observations.  You should be taking photos of your observations.
]Week 1 April 11 to April 15
Week 2 April 18 to April 22
Week 3 April 25 to April 29
Week 4 May 2 to May 6
Week 5 May 9 to May 13
Week 6 May 16 to May 20 (final observation week)

Parts of Plants Project

You are going to be creating a 3-D model of a flower, any flower.  With this model, you will have to label different part of the plant.
Flower Part:
Make sure that you label all the parts of the flower.  Make sure it is thorough so look up the different parts.  Make sure you explain the overall function of the flower.
Parts of the Stem
Make sure you look up and explain the parts of the stem.  Are your stem woody or herbaceous.  Make sure you explain the xylem and phloem, as well as the overall function of the leaf.
Parts of the Leaf
Make sure your leaf is representative of you plant and explain the parts of leaves and the functions are well as the overall function of the leaf
Parts of the Roots

Make sure your root is representative of you plant and explain the parts of the root and the functions.  Make sure to explain what type of root it is.  Make sure you also explain the overall function of roots.
Plant adaptations
Most plants have some type of special adaptations, for your plant show this and explain what it is and how it is an adaptation for your plant.  Example:  Thorns

This will need to be done by Tuesday you will be presenting your plant to the Horticulture society on Wednesday.

Revision of Plants Assingment

You will be fixing the flowers you created to include all the information that you left off for the Horticulture Gala. This is for both your model and the written information asked.  I will give you the evaluation form so that you can make sure that everything you missed on your flowers are present.  You can not miss anything, so make sure that you carefully review what you have missed.  This will be a test grade.

You will then have a new Gala for the fixed flowers.  This time all the information should be present.  As long as you have included everything and fixed everything I will change your grade (your lab grade)  I have not entered the lab grade as of yet but I will soon.  If you get everything done, and perfectly I will add 15 points to the lab grade.  If anything is missed, the Grade will stay as is.  The next Gala will be on Monday April 25.

Project Evaluation Form

Use this to fix your flowers, remember it needs to be perfect and it is due on Monday.

Hydroponics Research

You will write a one page research paper on hydroponics.  What is it, what are the benefits to hydroponics and what are some drawbacks.  You should have at least three sources.  They need to be cited and you should have a reference page.  It needs to be written in APA format.

Lima Bean Observation Paper

The following will give you the break-down on your observation paper.  Remember, it must be typed.  See the directions for details.  It is due on Monday 5/23/16 as soon as you get to class.  It must be printed, your observation papers must be in order and stapled to the paper.  If you typed your observations, they should be printed and stapled to your paper.  This is a lab grade.

Hydroponics Project

Congratulations, you have been hired to design a sustainable hydroponics system to be used in the biotechnology department at Irvin High School.  The hydroponic system should be easy to use, not take up to much space, and functional to grow small vegetables and or herbs.  Follow the following directions and get started.  This will be a lab grade.
You will have to present and everyone in the team must have a part in the presentation.  You need to know your material.  You should have a presentation made for your hydroponic system however, you can not read from it.  This will be a test grade and will be done during finals week.  If you are exempt from taking the final, you will get bonus point for this, however, it must be quality work and you must be present since it will still count as a regular test grade and a final grade.  If you are not exempt from the final, know that the test grade will count as both a test grade and your final grade.
