Viruses
Viruses are very small microbes that are composed of genetic material surrounded by a protein coat. Viruses by themselves are not consided living because they have no cytoplasm, internal metabolism, and cannot grow and divide. Viruses need another living organism call a host to carry out their reproductive life cycle. Once inside the living cell of another organism called a host they carry out their reproductive life cycle. Once inside the living cell of another organism, they use the machinery of the infected cell to produce viral parts.

Viral Outreach Project
This is your mission that you must choose to except (because its a grade) is that you will research viruses and create an awareness poster or pamphlet. Make sure that you follow all the instructions, pay special attention to the timelines, you will be receiving grades for these timelines. This is an individual assignment.
Timelines:
Timelines will be given to you through this project. You will be graded on these timelines. The date will be given to you on the break down of the project. On those days, the requested information must be completed. That means that it must be completed on your poster/pamphlet on that day. This will be a daily grade and you will not be able to make up these grades.
Project Breakdown
The items that need to be in your poster or pamphlet are as follows
Timeline: Monday 11/28/16 B day, (Tues 11/29/16 A day)
* You have to research the structure of the virus and on your poster you have to draw a viral structure and you have to label and explain those components. You must have at least 5 components on the structure of the virus. I want your work not a copy of the internet site. Make it unique, this will be 50% of the grade. If I see you copied, points will be deducted.
-Tell me what a virus is. Draw a viral structure and you have to label and explain those components. You must have at least 5 components on the structure of the virus. This must be on your poster. Keep in mind what needs to be on your poster, make sure you make room on your poster for everything that needs to be on it. You can only use one side. This part is due today after class. Do not procrastinate. I will pick them up after school.
Timeline: Wednesday 11/30/16, (Thur 12/1/16 A day)
*You have to research the replication cycles of a virus. You have to label a drawing of, with a clear explanation, of the lytic and lysogenic cycle on your poster/pamphlet. Again, careful that you are not coping what you find on the internet, but that you make it yours. Keep the attached videos in mind to help you with this. This must be on your poster and the previous section must be complete if you did not get to complete it. This is due at the end of class today, I will pick them up after school. Continue on your started poster.
Timeline: Friday 12/2/16 (Monday 12/5/16 A day)
*Research HIV and Influenza. Explain on the poster/pamphlet how each one is transmitted and prevention methods for each. This must be on your poster and the previous section must be complete if you did not get to complete it. This is due at the end of class today, I will pick them up after school. Continue on your poster. Your poster should be completed by today.
Timeline: Tuesday 12/6/16 (Wednesday 12/7/16 A day)
* Present poster/pamphlet-You will present your poster today, remember this is a test grade. You will have 1 minute to present everything on your poster.
Grades:
*Daily grade- 4, these are your timeline grades
*Lab grade- Your poster/pamphlet will be a lab grade-remember neatness and creativity counts.
*Test grade-Your presentation will be a test grade. Along with your presentation of your poster/pamphlet, you will be asked certain questions regarding viruses. If you researched correctly, you should be able to answer these questions. If you can not answer these questions, it will affect your grade. During the answering of the questions, you will not be allowed to view your poster or your pamphlet, or anybody else poster or pamphlet.
Good luck and have fun learning about Viruses
Use the power point and videos to help you with understanding viruses and with your project. You will also have to use the following links, and only these links, (do not use other sources, you can only use these) to create your poster or brochure.
